{"id":2186,"date":"2022-02-28T14:46:14","date_gmt":"2022-02-28T14:46:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/truthtechnologies.com\/?p=2186"},"modified":"2022-02-28T14:46:14","modified_gmt":"2022-02-28T14:46:14","slug":"national-bank-of-pakistan-fined-55-million","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/truthtechnologies.com\/es\/national-bank-of-pakistan-fined-55-million\/","title":{"rendered":"National Bank of Pakistan Fined $55 Million"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Lack of Compliance From the National Bank of Pakistan<\/h2>\n<p>The National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) and it\u2019s New York Branch have been subject to a total of $55 million dollars in fines for gaps in its compliance methods.\u00a0 The Federal Reserve imposed $35 million of those fines and the superintendent of financial services of New York Adrienne A Harris imposed $20.4 million.<\/p>\n<h2>Issues Arising From 2016<\/h2>\n<p>An order was issued by the Federal Reserve citing significant lack of oversight in risk management, and Anti-Money Laundering(AML) compliance measures that align with federal regulations.\u00a0 This order was issued last year March (2021) that was prompted by a written agreement back in March of 2016 in which the National Bank of Pakistan was charged with correcting its deficiencies.\u00a0 When the order was issued it found that NBP did not make any changes to its compliance methodologies, and they failed to achieve compliance congruent with every section of the written agreement. Because of this failure to act NBP and the Federal Reserve have entered an Assessment of a Civil Money Penalty.<\/p>\n<h2>The Federal Reserve Issues Fines<\/h2>\n<p>The Federal Reserve has imposed requirements for NBP to fix the gaps in compliance within 60 days of the new order. Those gaps include but are not limited to compliance with the Bank Secrecy Act, AML Compliance, Know Your Customer compliance, Suspicious Activity Monitoring and Transaction Monitoring, to name a few.\u00a0 In addition to this imposition, they are also requiring NBP to assign a compliance officer within 10 days of the notice.\u00a0 And to top it off, to help ensure compliance with the order, the Federal Reserve imposed a $35 million dollar fine on the bank.<\/p>\n<h2>NBP&#8217;s New York Branch Gets Fined<\/h2>\n<p>The National Bank of Pakistan has also allowed severe gaps in its compliance measure at its New York branch, despite authorities regularly warning the branch. Adrienne A Harris states that foreign banks who operate in New York (or in other parts of the United States) have a serious obligation to maintain transparency and proper controls to protect the global financial sector. Therefore, she has charged the New York Branch with 20.4 million in fines, with the hopes that they will take the warnings more seriously.<\/p>\n<h2>AML Compliance Growing<\/h2>\n<p>With the growing regulations in the financial sector, as well as shaky ground in the political arena, AML compliance and Know Your Customer (KYC) compliance issues are gaining momentum.
